The sunny cool Autumn day made for good racing conditions with good lap times by most competitors. The fastest overall time went to Mark Flood with average lap times of 19 minutes over his 4 completed laps. The top 2 places went to young “improving” riders Russell Nankervis (1st) and Tyler Hamilton (2nd), who both were able to maintain consistent lap times and hold off the fast finishing scratch riders. 3rd went to Phillip Soute , with Echuca’s Nicholas Lee coming home strongly to take 4th following his good form in the 12hr of Hard Knocks the week previous. Youngster Gareth Baker held off the fast finishing field to finish 5th, special mention to Tasman Nankervis and Mat Kirby for there greatly improved lap times. Handicapped Event 16/9/07

Sunday handicapped and Primary School event was held on the Cavagna's Rd Mary and Merrils Track, on the shorter 4.8km, with a total of 35 riders. The changes to the track were well recieved with the quicker riders (Josh Fleming) doing 14min laps, and the primary school riders (who did a big lap) doing a creditable 25min lap. Stephen Flood again continued his good form by winning overall and then doing a 5 lap to cool down. Closely followed by Darren Howell and Michael Floyd, with Nick Lee from Echuca and Tyler Hamilton, in his first race after stepping up from the primary school category. Gary Lewis again powered his way around the track, to take 6th, with Murray Willet riding well to take out 7th place. Commonwealth and Olypic representative Josh Fleming taking out the fastest time with 5 laps in 1hr 10sec, with his partner Jaci Low taking out the fastest womens overall time, and the 2nd fastest time.

Scott Chappell came in 1st in the long track with Chris Hamilton 2nd closely followed by Liam Greggs-Kennelly, special mention to Max Heiger who came 6th, not bad for an 8yr old on a small kids bike! The 1km track events was won by Aaron Knight followed by Kirsten Harvey.

3hr Teams Event

Sunday 22nd July saw the running of th clubs first 3 hr teams event. The events was well recieved with 48 riders in total including 15 f emale riders. The Cavagnas rd track had been revised to make it "more user friendly", shorter, less climbing and quicker, yet still fun and predominately single fast flowing single trail. Thanks to Mary, with the feedback from many riders reinforced these changes. The day started with one of the coldest frosts yet, but after a few laps people were quickly shedding clothes as the 13 - 19min laps, doing one at a time, introduced significant lactic acid into the muscles. Rob Huker and Peter Moronis established an early and eventually winning lead in the A Grade, closely followed by 3 teams who all finished within 4 minutes of each other. Jarrod Moroni pulled out the fastest lap, although putting up with having ridden a 200km road race the previous day and having a hangover. B grade was taken out by Tom Bastian and Nic Lee who both set consistent times, followed by Veteran Steve Flood on his full ridgid 7 speed and partner 15 yr old Russell Nankervis. 3rd was Jess Douglas from Geelong and 13yr old Tasman Nankervis with some amazing lap times, for his age. The 6 womens teams saw a range of riders, some of whom had not ridden a MTB event before, but had ago, which was great to see. Cindy Magro and Rosemary Britton came 1st with Penny Limmer and Sharon O Brien 2nd followed Ann Mc Inosh and Fran Medina. Congratulations to all who competed! This formate was huge success and promises to be bigger and better in the future. Click here for results

It is with regret that I inform people that Justin Lowndes, a former member and co-ordinator of events for the Bendigo club, he was an active member of Rocky Riders club and supporter of Mountain Biking Australia wide, passed away on Thursday 10th May. Justin was an avid and enthusiastic Mountain biker, who, even after numerous transplants and operations, would get out on his Trek dually and enjoy the "bush". Justin will be missed by the MTB community and we send his family and friends our deepest condolences. Justin was and will remain an inspiration to many MTB riders!

Jarrod Moroni dominates MTB tour (19th & 20th May)
Ex National Junior champion, Jarrod Moroni proved that he is still able to keep up with the A grade riders in the district by winning the Club 3 stage MTB tour on damp tracks. Jarrod set a cracking pace from the 1st stage on the Cahills Rd track, and gained a 5 plus minute advantage over Cannodale/Sram rider Robbie Hucker and further back Devon Greetham from Mansfield and Mark Flood. Jarrod was to maintain that lead througout the weekend, but found some tough resistance from Hucker especially on the final stage at the Cavagna's Rd track, where Hucker went out hard but Jarrod put the foot down on the final lap to reduce Huckers winning margin in that stage to 1 1/2 minutes. Mark Flood took out 3rd after  Greetham flatted on the last stage.
The B grade was dominated by youngster Jake Dwyer from Metcalfe, who won every stage, followed by veterans Gary Lewis and Peter Moroni, who prior to the final stage were seperated by 17 seconds, but in the final stage, Lewis proved too strong, going on the win the stage and take 2nd place by 1 1/2 minutes. A special mention to young Mat Kirby, who although being outgunned by some of the older stronger riders, managed to finish after breaking a chain on the last stage.

C grade proved to be the closest contast of the tour, with Vet Peter Carr, setting a cracking pace on the 1st stage, then seeing his lead being challenged by a number of riders in the grade, but in th end no one was able to over haul his lead, with 15yr old Shelly Flood 12 sec back taking 2nd from Mick Floyd.

On Sunday the 29th April 22 riders, with a number of new riders to the club events, participating in the final round of the summer series at the Scottys Track in Sedgwick. Overnight and recent good rains in the area turned some of the track into a mud bath and the numerous creek crossing an opportunity to wash the bike. The new sections of the track proved quite a challenge and slowed the lap times down considerable. Luke Knox blitzed the field to take out 1st place with Gary Lewis and Jeff Chappell filling the 2nd and 3rd positions. Ash Harvey rode strongly to take 4th place beating Trevor Dickson who finished 5th. Click here for the results. A field of ten young riders road in the Primary school event. Congratulations to all who participated in the event.

2007 Victorian Championships

On Sunday the 1st April the 2007 Victorian Championships were conducted by the Bendigo MTB Club. The event was held on a 6.3km predominately single trail track which included some new sections of track. 126 competitors registed in 16 various categories, with good representative in the juniour categories. A field of 25 riders started in the Elite category, having to complete 7 laps of the course. Murray Spink (giant), (19 yr old) Lachlan Norris, local riders Josh Fleming and (now roady)Tim Hucker went out hard with Ballarats Phil Orr in an attempt to establish a winning lead. After lapping close together for 4 laps the pressure began to tell with Spink and Norris beginning to pull away from the rest of the field. On the bell lap they had established a 2-3 min advantage over the chasing riders, and this set up a duel to see who had the most left for the last lap. In the end Murray Spink was just too strong taking out another Victorian State Championship title, with Lachlan Norris 10 sec behind in 2nd and Josh Fleming finishing strongly to take 3rd, 4th place went to Phil Orr and 5th Tim Hucker.

The womens Elite with the absence of National Champion Tori Thomas proved to be a closely fought 5 lap race between Jenni King, local rider Jo Wall and (Spokens) Erica Gerner. Jenni was able to pull away in the last 2 laps to take the win 62sec from Jo Wall and closely followed by Eric Gerner. Expert men was won by Ern Francis 35 Sec in front of Ashley Hayat, Local Rob Hucker, Tim Mc Coll and Nick Bird won Under 19, Veterans and Masters Men respectively, in times that would have seen either of them  take out the Expert category.

A strong field of under 15's were in attendance, with local riders enjoying the home track advantage with Matthew Keays 1st, Jack Haig 2nd and Lance Renshaw 3rd (from Warragul) in under 15's. In the Under 17’s Luke Fletch came from behind to take 1st, from James Peacock (Scott Flight Centre Team) and Paul Liston 3rd. 15yr old Shelley Flood overcame a broken chain to finish 1st in under 17's women and Anslie Bennet finished 1st in under 15 women. Special mention goes to 12 yr old Liam Kennelly-Griggs competing in his first Mtb race in the “fun” category, completed his 2 laps and finishing 1st.
